Liminal Band, take 2.
  • BUMPITY BUMP!

So, I've been meaning to get back into music for a while after all the fun we had last year. And lo and behold, just a few days ago one of my good friends came over to lend me her acoustic guitar. Not just out of the goodness of her heart, rather so that I can practice for my musical duties at her upcoming wedding.

Any which way, this reminded me that we kinda got started on talking about the next Liminal Band working. So here's  a thread for that. I'll try and past over some of the chat from the previous thread, so that we can refer back without crossing threads all the time.

But first of all I'd like an informal show of hands. I'm in, WHO'S WITH ME?

  • Okay, so here's where we got to back in Spring.

Green Man, Hunter/ess, the Wee Folk. Plenty of room for natural sounds and olde instruments. I've got a mandolin and bodhran...and chain saw.

The planets. Either individually or the whole system.

Ancient Mysteries. Anything from Willendorf to The Gnostics.

The Dark Side (and I don't mean LFC, Grotto ;-)

    Folk magic/hoodoo/cunning folk.

Possession/trance/states of consciousness. From the Shaman's throat warbling to the rhythms of Africa and America via ceremonial Names of Power.

Grotto of Nolte said: I'm drawn to the order.balance.chaos trip. As Princess says there's something liberating about rules. At the same time a lot of music I listen to is if not chaotic then certainly less ordered.

genlob said: Ember's comment suggests another possible theme - ritual landscapes.

Looks like there's 2 front runners, so far. Trees/vegetation and order/chaos/balance

EmberLeo said: Ritual Landscapes + Trees + Order/Chaos/Balance = Yggdrasil

Princess said: These could work together. A sort of forest vs. civilisation theme. Different types of order, and how chaos is really just order that you don't understand.
  • GAH! Why no work le quotes????????? Anyone see what I'm doing wrong?

Count me in G. I'm off up t' the 'pool this weekend and will be returning with my bodhran, so get ready for Irish rhythms galore.
  • Nice, I love the bodhran!

I'm willing. As usual, gods only know if I'm able.

I am much with the singing.

I also have things like rain sticks and other percussion, and might be able to convince my drummer friends to come play (djembe, dumbek, etc.).

Technically I own several stringed instruments, but I'm not that great at playing any of them.

Oh, and if the theme ends up Yggdrasil, I know quite a few Heathen songs, but I'd need permission to use the ones I didn't write...

  • I like the ideas of trees, or plants more generally, and contrasting/coupling it with order/chaos/balance. Fun factoid - a basic difference between plants and animals is that plants are modular. Meaning that while leaves will look about the same based on a genetic recipe, there are no instructions for the number of parts in the overall body-plan. A tree might have 50 branches or 500, it's still a healthy tree. I'm not explaining myself very well...

I followed what you said, Grotto. :)

[edit] And that gives me the fascinating idea of Yggdrasil growing new branches and thus new worlds... it seems so obvious, why have I never thought of it before? There's no reason at all why Yggdrasil should be static like a statue, or even only ever growing and dropping leaves and fruit but never new branches or roots....

  • No, sing it out loud!!!!
  • EmberLeoEmberLeo January 18
    Sing what out loud?

    How about Nine Wyrts?

    What you were pondering.

Oh, I'd typed up what all I had so far.

I don't think in language for deeper stuff, I think in shapes and images, first. So translation is required, which requires that the thoughts be translatable..

I think the only thing I left out at the time was "I should go meditate on that, and journey to see what Yggdrasil might tell me about it..."

With Liminal Band 1 there was a sort of folder set up where we could deposit our sound files so others could hear/mess around with them. Anyone with more internet expertise than me (probably most people) know how to set one up for LB2?

  • It was box.net IIRC. I've set up a new one, PM me your email addresses so that you can upload files to it. If possible try and keep them as small as possible as I've only got 5 gigs of space. It should be enough, but if people add videos and such it tots up quickly.
  • genlobgenlob January 23
    Top man.
  • So, are we still thinking of trees, things that grow, order v. chaos, that sorta thing? I like it. You mightn't. Tell us here in this shiny thread.
  • EmberLeoEmberLeo January 23
    I'm still thinking "Ritual Landscapes + Trees + Order/Chaos/Balance = Yggdrasil"

    -E-
  • Oops, yes, ritual landscapes. All of a sudden my mind is filled with memories of Iron Maiden's Powerslave, teehee...
  • genlobgenlob January 24
Works for me - vegetation, order/chaos, ritual landscape. There's a lot of scope there for all sorts of loveliness.
  • EmberLeoEmberLeo January 24
Would it be ok if I started by doing a set of vocalizations for each of the 9 worlds and the Tree?

Obviously you don't have to use them, but those are my strongest associations for these themes....

And I've had an idea for a spoken word thing which I think I'm going to get down on paper/audio. Same thing as Ember, if it works use it, if it doesn't dont.
  • Whatever you want, lovelies! Princess, do you need an invitation, yes? PM me your email addy.
  • grantgrant February 27
    Digging the percussion thus far.
  • Percussion in da box! Loving it. I'll have to start putting some guitar to that.
